Mopani heartwood features a rich, reddish-brown palette, interspersed with thin, dark veins. It is a fantastic turning wood, and is highly acclaimed as a tone wood for woodwind instruments. Because of its high oil content, it is very resistant to splitting and polishes well. These turning blanks are available in an assortment of sizes for bowls, platters, carvings, bottle stoppers, chess pieces, tool handles, table legs, spindles, finials, candlesticks and whatever else your imagination can conjure up!
Due to high demand and limited supply, we cannot always guarantee that this item will be in stock. Turning Blanks come rough sawn to nominal thickness and are coated with wax.Tree: Reaches heights of up to 90' depending on availability of water. Trunks may reach 35" in diameter. In dry regions, these numbers can easily be cut in half.Native to: Southern Africa.Heartwood: Reddish brown with dark veins.Sapwood: Pale yellow.Working Characteristics: Turns well with sharp tools. Otherwise quite difficult to machine.Natural Durability: Its density and oils make it very resistant to termites.Uses: Turnery. Excellent tone wood for clarinets and other woodwind instruments. Mopani now competes heavily with African Blackwood, which is the traditional top-end choice.Strength: Extremely hard, heavy and dense. When dry, it can weigh up to 77 lb. per cubic foot.
